Araw ng Kagitingan is just a non-working holiday within the Philippines that is part of the long weekend. On this day, World War II vets marched through numerous areas in the Philippines. There are many simple parades throughout the Philippines, however, the headliner of Araw ng Kagitingan when the nation's leader delivers a monologue at the Mt Samat Shrine in Bataan province to immortalize the heroic actions of Filipino and American soldiers all through World War II. Araw ng Kagitingan honors the bravery of Filipinos and American soldiers all through World War II when the Japanese colonized the Philippines. On April 9, 1942, Major General Edward P. King, of the U.s. Army was forced to abandon upwards of 76,000 Filipinos, Chinese, and American soldiers to the Japanese. The troops had to hike 90 miles (145 kilometers) to Camp O'Donnell in San Fernando.
